portfolio cover

The title page, the plan in 12 sheets, the 2 small plans and the 4 sheets of index comprise the first true facsimile, being exactly the same dimensions as the original suite of 19 sheets (36 pages and the title page), as first published by Giambattista Nolli in 1748.

the title page

The plan in 12 sheets (assembled dimensions: approximately 82" [208 cm] wide by 68" [173 cm] high) is printed in line offset on archival Mohawk vellum acid-free 65 lb. cover paper with a sheet size of 32" [81cm] by 22" [56cm].

Pianta Grande di Roma

Also included are 2 small plans (approximately 27" [68cm] wide by 17" [43 cm] high). The first, by Piranesi and Nolli, is a reduction of the 12 sheet Pianta Grande.

The second is Nolli's tribute republication of the 1551 first true (ichnographic) plan of Rome by Leonardo Bufalini.

Nolli's reprint of Buffalini's 1551 plan

There are 4 sheets of the original engraved index in 2 columns: 1) by numbers (from the plan), and 2) an alphabetical index. At the end of the entire index are four scale bars giving 4 different common statutory measures of Nolli's time, and a legend--Avvertimento.

The portfolio has a 12 page bi-lingual (English / Italian) essay, Portait of a City, by Allan Ceen, with illustrations, which reveals the significance of the plan as the eighteenth century benchmark of urban topography and cartography.

essay booklet

It discusses the iconography of the decorations, the background and history of the plan and its makers, a chronology of Giambattista Nolli's life, an annotated legend for the pianta grande translated from the Italian Avvertimento, and a bibliography.
